The Hateful Eight Script Leak: 8 Spoilers From Quentin Tarantino's Western
5. Chapter 3 - Minnie's (Part One)
Due to it being the longest portion of the film, Chapter 3 has been split into two sections here. The group now arrives at Minnie's Haberdashery, a joke given that it in no way resembles such an establishment. It is also important to remember that upon arriving, the gang spots an abandoned stagecoach tucked to the side of the building. A Frenchman named Bob is looking after the place while Minnie is away with her partner Sweet Dave visiting family. We meet 3 men inside, a blonde English hangman who will coincidentally be hanging Daisy in Red Rock (Oswaldo Mobray), an old Confederate General named Sanford Smithers who is in town preparing the headstone for his dead son's funeral plot, and a lone cowboy by the name of Joe Gage, who is heading just outside of Red Rock to spend time with his mother. This part of the story is mostly concerned with introductions, with plenty of Tarantino's classic conversational dialogue taking root, and very reminiscent of the tavern scenes in Inglourious Basterds. Chris gets friendly with Smithers, but things get tense when Warren enters the room, almost coming to blows with his fellow army officer from the opposite side. Ruth becomes paranoid that one of the three men isn't who they say they are, convinced they are going to kill him and free Daisy. He and Warren end up disarming everyone in the place for security's sake, and as they eat, Ruth (rather foolishly) uncuffs Daisy. Smithers and Warren talk over the course of the meal, with Warren declaring that he knew Smithers' son the day he died in battle, even claiming that he died by his own hand. Whether the story was true or not doesn't matter, because Warren's goal is to goad Smithers into picking up the gun he places in front of him, so that he can legally kill him in self-defense. Warren continues to taunt him, saying that he forced Smithers' son to perform oral sex on him in exchange for a blanket, one that Warren never even gave him. Smithers flips and grabs the gun, but Warren has the drop on him, shooting him into the fireplace, at which point he burns to a crisp.
