The Hobbit: 10 Best Moments From The First Two Films

9. Smaug's First Appearence

Well there's obviously no surprise that Smaug's appearance in the second film is present on this list. The dragon is quite possibly the best part about The Desolation Of Smaug. Ever since the final teaser shot of the sleepy dragon's eye opening at the climax of the first Hobbit film, fans have waited with baited breath to see the flying reptile in all of his scaly glory, and Desolation absolutely paid off, and then some. From his slow, leisurely rise from his stolen pit of riches, to the extremely large grin and menacing eyes, the film did an undeniably top-notch job of bringing one of fiction's most famous dragons to life for the big screen. Smaug's provocative and inquisitive conversation with Bilbo is a rarity in fantasy films, and it's telling when a simple exchange of words between a dragon and a hobbit is more mesmerising than watching said dragon fly about and smash through numerous walls. Benedict Cumberbatch is deserving of any praise he gets for voicing the monster too. His vocal work wasn't as heavily modified for the role as you'd expect, meaning he really gave the beast character. Speaking of which, does anyone think the end result sounded remarkably like Tim Curry?
