The Hobbit: 10 Best Moments From The First Two Films

8. The Goblin King's Domain

Another brilliant example of spectacle, Gandalf and the dwarven company's escape from the Goblin King's domain is one of the best action scenes in An Unexpected Journey, helped in no small part, again, by some stellar camera work. By keeping the film's protagonists always on the move, their escape from the underground cesspit of the goblin domain is a scene that moves thick and fast, and it works especially well by being interspersed with scenes of Bilbo's interactions with Gollum (more on that later). Above all of that though, you get to see Gandalf at some of his highest levels of awesomeness. Not only does he kill the Goblin King in one fell swoop of his staff after the fat monarch chastises them for never being able to escape, but he also single-handedly ensures that the dwarves escape with their lives. Gandalf the White may be far more powerful, but Gandalf the Grey is just too cool for his own good.
