The Hobbit: 10 Best Moments From The First Two Films
6. Beorn
Rarely do you do you find characters in Tolkien's fantasy universe that have no ulterior motive, mission or vested interest in something. The dwarves want their home back and love gold, the elves are vain and want to preserve their way of life and Sauron wants to rule Middle-Earth. Beorn, on the other hand, is just a giant humanoid that can take on the form of an equally giant, bear-like creature. That's not to say that the 'skin-changer' doesn't care about anything, but when Gandalf takes the company of dwarves and Bilbo to his home to seek refuge, they're granted a short reprieve from the horrors of the wider world. As the audience, you are too, and Beorn's almost paradise like home, walled off from any outside interference, presents a nice change of scenery for the cast of the film. For anyone who has read the original book though, you'll know that you haven't seen the last of the mildly friendly giant, and when you finally get to see the final battle play out on-screen in the final Hobbit film, you can be sure that Beorn will be there.
