The Hobbit: 10 Best Moments From The First Two Films
7. Gandalf's Journey Into Dol Guldur
Tolkien purists will no doubt hate the fact that the scene in question appears on this list, but even if you're a die hard fan of the source material, there's really no reason to hate the various scenes in The Hobbit where Jackson took liberties with the source material. Especially this one. At various points throughout the novel, Gandalf leaves the company of dwarves on their journey to the Lonely Mountain, giving nary a reason as to why he must leave. Peter Jackson, love him or loathe him for the changes he made, really just filled in the blanks of the novel. Now, no one is saying that making the relatively short novel into three feature length films was a good thing, but not all the changes that Jackson made were bad. Gandalf's foray into Dol Guldur and his subsequent interaction with The Necromancer (i.e. Sauron) is never mentioned in the book, but it's a sub-plot that's heavily implied by both the book and the overarching narrative of both The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings.
