The Hobbit: 10 Best Moments From The First Two Films

4. Bilbo And Gollum's Game Of Riddles

It's a scene that many fans of the novel were hoping in equal parts that Jackson wouldn't mess up and that they were itching to see. Thankfully, Jackson didn't disappoint, and the game of riddles between Bilbo and Gollum is, without a doubt, the single best scene in An Unexpected Journey. But then again, with Andy Serkis having returned to play the role through motion capture, there's hardly any surprise that it turned out so well. Gollum is as tragic as tragic characters come, and while his total infatuation with the One Ring has almost totally consumed him, old Sméagol can still find it within himself to have a little fun with Hobbits. Putting aside the potentially morbid outcome of Bilbo losing the game, the scene shows an almost light-hearted, child-like side to Gollum, a glimmer of his former self before he found his "precious", and the back-and-forth between both him and Bilbo is a pure treat. Don't forget either, that Martin Freeman managed to keep a straight face while talking to a leotard-wearing Serkis with a motion capture camera strapped to his face.
