3. Gandalf vs The Necromancer
Ironically, one of the most anticipated scenes of the forthcoming movies is one which is only fleetingly mentioned in book. The Necromancer of Dol Guldur appeared in An Unexpected Journey as Radegast (the Brown) sought to uncover the darkness which had befallen the forests. Upon arrival, he discovered a dark power, known only as The Necromancer, had taken up residence in the ancient fortress of Dol Guldur. Without wishing to provide spoilers for those who are unfamiliar with the novel: the Necromancer is a particularly bad man. While deep in the appendixes of Lord of the Rings there is a tale of Gandalf venturing to the fortress, only to discover the Necromancer has retreated, movie logic would dictate that at some point in the following films Gandalf will confront this evil doer: presumably resulting in some form of wizard duel. This is particularly intruiging as while we have been told from the very beginning he is no conjuror of cheap tricks the actual power of Gandalf is shown only fleetingly in Lord of the Rings. As such, the idea of a bit of wizarding smackdown sounds quite appealing.
