The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 10 Essential Scenes It Should Include

2. Bilbo Stuck In The Doorway

After winning the riddle-game and secretly following Gollum to the goblin lair€™s exit, Bilbo can see the door to the outside just ahead of him. Unfortunately, it€™s guarded by some goblins, and Bilbo is not sure he can get through, even wearing his magical ring. So he jumps through the guards and runs for the exit but, due to his respectable girth, is stuck in the doorway. The goblins see his shadow and move to attack but Bilbo forces his way out, tearing his waistcoat and losing some of his buttons. This scene must be in the movie. I know this article is entitled €œshould,€ but this is the exception. It€™s moments like this that make The Hobbit such a great book. We just finish a nightmarish encounter€”Bilbo lost in the depths of the mountain and barely escaping the hunger of Gollum€”and transition immediately to a humorous one. The tension hasn€™t gone away; Bilbo€™s actually about to be captured again by the goblins. It€™s just been superimposed by the image of a chubby hobbit fretting about losing his buttons after ripping his waistcoat.
