5. The Elves And The Dwarves Might Be Getting Along?
Throughout both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy it is a common thread that elves and dwarves are not exactly best mates. This is what makes the relationship between Gimli and Legolas so special as they are breaking boundaries. Similarly, in An Unexpected Journey, we saw the elven army leave the dwarves of Erebor to their fate at the hands of Smaug. This makes it all the more surprising that in the first seconds of the trailer we see Lee Pace's Thranduil tell the dwarves that he will help them. Could The Desolation of Smaug present a thawing in the relations between the dwarves and the elves as they work together to reclaim the dwarven homeland. The presence of Tauriel might explain this. In the trailers she seems very aware of how the battle against Smaug links to the bigger picture in Middle Earth. On the flipside of this is the fact that this movie will include the barrel sequence. This has the potential to be a very fun set piece in The Desolation of Smaug but crucially involves the dwarves escaping from the clutches of the elves. Maybe the resolution to the elf/dwarf divide is something that we will just have to wait for.
