10. Bilbo Wins The Riddle Game
I mean, OBVIOUSLY, given that the trailers ahead of release featured Gollum's wager for the game - and the assertion that should Bilbo lose, Gollum will eat him whole. There's very much the sense that this scene was designed as Jackson's crowning glory The riddles themselves are taken from the Hobbit text, though there are only some of Tolkien's original riddles included - Bilbo's teeth and egg riddles make it in, and as does his victorious "what do I have in my pockets?" query, while Gollum's wind, and time riddles are included. That means there is no space for the remaining four riddles from the original text - whose answers are the sun on a daisy, the dark, a fish and finally "Fish on a little table, man at table sitting on a stool, the cat has the bones." Obviously the were cut for timing issues - though the sun on the daisy and the final riddle are a little too poetic to fit the increasing darkness of Jackson's take on the scene - and the embellished interactions between the two characters more than make up for the missing parts.
