The Hobbit Trilogy: 10 Dumbest Moments

6. Legolas Chats To Gloin About Gimli

This scene is just one of many in which Peter Jackson is unable to measure subtetly. When Gloin flips open his locket and exclams €œthat's my wee lad, Gimli€ you can practically see Jackson standing off-camera smiling and winking.

This might not even be that bad if it wasn't yet another example of an overly hammy The Lord Of The Rings reference amongst so many. From direct lines (the eagles are coming!) to ripped off scenes (Gandalf's room-darkening shout at Bag End) there are countless occasions on which The Hobbit goes way too far. What makes it all the worse is how Jackson actually displays the ability to nod towards The Lord Of The Rings using visual clues - in certain scenes Gloin is seen wearing a helmet extremely similar to Gimli's, and wielding a familiar axe. Why couldn't this reference have been something fun for the audience to discover for themselves? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHWJJ4BsHQw
