4. Thorin Surfs On Molten Gold (Using A Piece Of Metal)
This ridiculous scene is an extension of the lack of reality established in An Unexpected Journey during the Goblin-Town chase scene. The entire furnace sequence is pretty stupid - from Smaug's sudden lack of intelligence to the company's resistance to intense heat - but it's when Thorin surfs across molten gold on a wheelbarrow that things are elevated to new levels of dumb. Mistakes and little logical fallacies in films are generally excusable when they don't have much bearing on the plot or the outcome of the story - but when they ride the line between a main character living or dying they're slightly more problematic. There has been much fan debate about whether or not the molten lava would have melted the iron wheelbarrow - in the end, it doesn't really matter. What is agreed on is that Thorin should have at the very least been so severely burned by the hot iron that his skin would have melted. Ouch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXAVsOSAuwk
