The Hobbit Trilogy: 10 Worst CGI Moments

7. The Golden Chocolate Dwarf

The decision to turn The Hobbit into a trilogy wasn't taken until principle photography was completed. This meant the initially planned two movies had to be stretched into three. Peter Jackson was forced to undertaken extensive pick up shoots in order to justify an extra film, and even then he was forced to splice in extensive CGI sequences to flesh out the run time.

There were a number of moments when this was painfully obvious to the viewer, but non other seemed as redundant as the huge chase sequence with the dwarves and Smaug in movie two. It stretched on for an ungodly amount of time, to the point of tedium, until the egregious climax when Smaug came face to face with what looked like a giant Christmas chocolate, wrapped in golden foil.

Let's put aside how unlikely this sequence was to happen, and instead focus on the crappy CGI moment of the 'molten gold' bubbling out to douse the dragon in glitter. In contrast to Smaug - who was one of the finer CGI creations in the movie - the glowing statue just looked like a cheap bauble you'd find under the Christmas tree.
