The Hobbit Trilogy: 10 Worst CGI Moments
3. Every Scene With Dáin II Ironfoot
One of the few joys of the final Hobbit movie was the inclusion of Billy Connolly as Dáin Ironfoot. The Scottish actor had the perfect cadence to portray a hotheaded and feisty old dwarf, with equal parts humour and grandeur.
Sadly, Connolly was struggling with the early stages of Parkinson's disease during the early 2010s, as well as receiving treatment for prostate cancer. Although he'd initially visited New Zealand to have prosthetic make-up designed, it became clear the physicality of his characters would be too much of strain, given his health issues.
Rather than recast the role, however, Jackson decided to go ahead anyway. He had Connolly record all of his dialogue and made the decision to add a fully digitalised version of the character in, later. Although Dain's scene were memorable, visually he looked off. The vocal performances were great but the CGI features were immediately apparent. It was another example of Jackson thinking he could fix his movie in post-production by plastering over the holes with special effects.
