The Hobbit vs The Lord of the Rings

8. The Hobbit

The Hobbit

Interestingly, though he is the ring bearer - meaning the fate of the world is dependent on his success - it was Sam, and not Frodo, who Tolkien intended to be interpreted as the central protagonist of The Lord of the Rings. Indeed, his exploits as Frodo's protector prove he is the better fit for the role of hero.

Bilbo, on the other hand, is a different character altogether. In An Unexpected Journey alone, he outsmarts the mountain trolls, outwits Gollum and overpowers an orc of Azog's company. All this he does single-handed, whilst simultaneously composing himself as befitting a hobbit of the Shire.

Outside of the characters, Martin Freeman's portrayal of Bilbo is nothing short of an acting mastery. Having built his career up over the years, Freeman has developed himself into one of the leading British actors of the current generation. Elijah Wood, on the other hand, was less impressive in his portrayal of Frodo. Undoubtedly hampered by Frodo's less adventurous persona, Wood's character would never have progressed further than the Shire were it not for the aid of his many companions.

Winner - Bilbo Baggins, An Unexpected Journey
