The Hunt Review: 8 Ups & 5 Downs

5. It Isn't TRYING To Be Smart

The Hunt Betty Gilpin
Universal Pictures

If you look at other reviews of this movie, you'll see some very respected folk saying The Hunt seems to be trying to say something clever and ultimately ends up failing and coming off as a little hollow. This is patently misguided.

The truth of The Hunt - and one of its biggest selling points, in fact - is that it's a farce. It's obscene, outrageous and absurd and it wears those colours very openly on its sleeve. It isn't trying to preach other than a general message of stop being a f*cking idiot who lives in extremes. Everyone involved (other than one character, pretty much) is a Scary Movie level caricature.

You know these people - they're from your Facebook or Twitter (increasingly these days) - and they ALL deserve to be lampooned. But that doesn't mean the film is taking sides though and nor is it telling you how to react exactly. It's just a carnival of fools.
