The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part Review - 6 Ups And 2 Downs

7. Down: Characters Are Separated Far Too Often

One of the first movie's best aspects was the way the extremely different personalities of the characters would interact with one another. Unfortunately, throughout much of this movie, they are largely separated from each other and it drags the film down. The number of great interactions and established group dynamics was limited because of this and it led to less moment-to-moment laughs.

Adding on to that point, fan-favorite characters like Benny, Metalbeard, and Unikitty get substantially reduced screentime in favor of bolstering more runtime for the main players in the story. It works from a story/character standpoint, as Emmet and Batman do go through noticeable changes as the movie progresses. This point only really becomes noticeable when fewer jokes seem to land and you think about how the likes of Charlie Day or Alison Brie could enhance that particular scene.

Once the characters are together, you get that joyous feeling that the first movie had where all of these absurdly-lovable personalities are together, all the jokes are landing, and it's an absolute blast. If they were able to include even more moments like this, The Second Part would've certainly been improved.

Now then, let's get into what makes LEGO Movie 2 such a joy.
