The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part Review - 6 Ups And 2 Downs

6. Up: Mike Mitchell's Chaotic, Colorful Direction

Lego Movie 2 Batman
Warner Bros

It's no easy task trying to measure up to Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but Mike Mitchell is able to take the wild, visual-gag heavy world of LEGO and put his own spin on it while maintaining the aesthetic that has already been established. With Lord and Miller's script being a wacky over-the-top tale that spans several worlds, it makes perfect sense that they'd enlist the help of the man behind the completely absurd, visually stunning Trolls.

Mitchell uses the film's script as a means of expanding the world in more than ways than one. From an even more varied color palette and several perfectly over-the-top musical sequences (more on that later), the film is rather striking. However, Mitchell still includes plenty of subtle gags and details. The way characters like General Mayhem moves up-and-down while walking since they don't have legs like the other LEGO figures, or how the background of every scene is densely-packed with jokes.

He even does a great job with the live-action sequences that are included at certain points in the story. All in all, Mike Mitchell was a great fit for this universe and earned his leading position for this project.
