The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Characters NOT In The Fellowship

1. Gollum

Lord Of The Rings Saruman
New Line Cinema

One of Tolkien's greatest creations ever and one of the most famous and iconic characters in the whole franchise, Gollum was a twisted and resentful shadow of his former self after spending several years being corrupted by the One Ring.

Gollum was brought to life with impressive CGI and an even more impressive Andy Serkis who instantly gave us a memorable voice and physical performance that will live on forever. Serkis is the biggest example when talking about taking motion captured performances seriously and that all began with his work here.

Constantly struggling between his former identity as the timid Sméagol and the now warped Gollum, he is a complex and ultimately tragic character who is unable to break free for his obsessive addiction. After joining Frodo and Sam as their guide to Mordor. Frodo feels that he can see the good in Gollum which makes it all the more saddening when he cannot prove himself to be good anymore.

This all climaxes in the final film as Gollum attempts to murder Frodo and Sam and take the One Ring for himself. He bites off some of Frodo's fingers and is finally reunited with his 'Precious' before being thrown into the lava of Mount Doom. One of the cinema's greatest villains ever.
