The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Characters NOT In The Fellowship

2. Saruman

Lord Of The Rings Saruman
New Line Cinema

The White Wizard of Isengard is a phenomenal character played by the incomparable Christopher Lee who dominates the screen in every scene he's in. Lee has a commanding presence that is unmatched by anyone in the cast and is the face of Sauron's war for two of the three films.

A former friend of Gandalf, Saruman was corrupted by Sauron's temptations and turned traitor becoming one of the most prominent threats to the Fellowship. Isengard soon began creating war machines and birthing the deadly Uruk-hai to wipe out the race of men. Lee's captivating performance and Saruman's emotional connection to Gandalf made him a highly effective villain.

An engrossing presence, Saruman's powers are almost unrivalled, showing off his capabilities when he defeated Gandalf the Grey in combat. Tolkien created a character so large and mighty, that it was a fitting piece of irony that he were to fall to the treacherous blade of his servant Grima.

Sadly, due to how packed the Return of the King became, Saruman was left on the cutting room floor so watching the extended addition is a must as a character of this magnitude deserves a send off and closure in the trilogy's finale.
