The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Characters NOT In The Fellowship

8. Faramir

Lord Of The Rings Saruman
New Line Cinema

The son of the Steward of Gondor and the brother of Boromir, Faramir was a complex character with a lot of baggage. His father Denethor favoured Boromir in almost every aspect leading Faramir to a life of constantly trying to impress him.

Faramir was a good and kind ranger of Gondor who encountered Frodo, Sam and Gollum on their way to Mordor. As all men who encounter the One Ring, Faramir struggles to resist its powers. Upon discovering his brother succumbed to the One Ring and tried to take it from Frodo, Faramir wrestled with his own desires for the weapon before managing to overcome its calls.

In a final bid to win his father's affections, Faramir led a suicide mission to Osgiliath in an attempt to regain it from Orc occupation. The attack was unsuccessful and almost resulted in Faramir's death. Denethor became convinced that all was lost and attempted to burn himself and his unconscious son alive. He is swiftly saved by Gandalf but Denethor perishes anyway.

Faramir never managed to truly gain the respect of his father but he was a proven warrior and a genuine man who fought on the side of good.
