The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Characters NOT In The Fellowship

7. Treebeard

Lord Of The Rings Saruman
New Line Cinema

An amazing Tolkien creation come to life, Treebeard is the oldest known ent in Middle-Earth and a good and moral custodian of Fangorn forest. He befriends Merry and Pippin after they escape their orc captors and is also pleasantly acquainted with Gandalf.

Treebeard has a powerful and commanding presence. He is several feet tall and voiced by the bombastic John Rhys-Davies who also plays Gimli. Treebeard is portrayed as a relatively neutral figure who doesn't wish to get involved in any conflicts that do not directly concern him or his fellow ents.

This leads to a surprisingly emotional scene in which Merry and Pippin manage to steer him into seeing the destruction that Saruman has brought upon the trees surrounding Isengard. Treebeard's horrified expression followed by his roar of a call to arms is an energetic moment that shows the wise ent as a force for justice.

An enigmatic individual, Treebeard's lack of social awareness could often be amusing. That didn't stop him from knowing when to be serious like when he and his ents storm Isengard and destroy Saruman's war machines in one of the most thrilling moments of the second film.
