The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Fighters In Middle-Earth Definitively Ranked

6. Fëanor

Arrogant, ambitious and quick to anger, Fëanor shattered The Lord of the Rings portrayal of elves as just, wise and noble. But for all his flaws he was arguably the most powerful, intelligent and skilled elf who ever lived, and one of the best fighters their race ever produced.

In the early days of the First Age, Fëanor, then High King of the Ñoldor, went to war with Morgoth to reclaim the stolen Silmarils. The elves easily defeated Morgoth’s forces. But, far from being a victory, this spelled Fëanor’s doom.

In his pride, Fëanor left his army behind, pursuing the fleeing enemy to within sight of Angband, with only a small guard around him. Seeing this, Morgoth sent every Balrog in Angband to attack him, quickly decimating his small force. Undaunted, Fëanor fought on alone, holding his own despite being wounded multiple times. It was only when Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs, entered the fray that Fëanor was finally overcome.

In all of Tolkien’s works Fëanor is the only character to fight such a large number of Balrogs and not only survive, but fight them to a standstill. Had he faced Morgoth, who knows what kind of damage he would have done.
