Vilya is one of the three Rings of Power created by Celebrimbor for the elves, and is considered to be the most powerful of the three. While it has been worn by multiple elves, its most notable wearer was Elrond.
The ring itself is a gold band inlaid with an incredible sapphire, and has the power to heal and preserve. Rivendell has always been a place of tranquillity and hospitality, being a place that no evil could touch. This is due to the power of Vilya, preserving the peace and balance of the safe haven.
While sometimes referred to as the Ring of Air, it appears to hold some manner of control over several elements, including water. When the black riders attempted to cross the Bruinen river, the water rose up against them in the appearance of a herd of horses and ran them down, protecting the elven sanctuary.
