8. The Two Towers: Potatoes
Uh-oh. More food jokes. Gollum has just caught a pair of rabbits and presented them to a bemused Frodo. Sam is still a bit non-plussed that Frodo is giving Gollum a chance to lead them into Mordor, and looks on disdainfully. But when Gollum starts to eat them raw, Sam angrily snatches them away and shouts, Theres only one way to eat a brace of coneys! The next scene shows Sam cooking a stew of rabbit meat, with Gollum squealing about how the stupid, fat hobbit is ruining the meat. Sam wistfully dreams out loud about adding some potatoes to the stew, and he and Gollum have an argument about cooked vs. raw food. The scene is deliberately silly, and is intended to lighten up the mood after an intense trek across the Dead Marshes and a visit to the Gates of Mordor. But after youve seen it a few times (and youve seen it more than that, don't deny it), it starts to get tiresome. Someone even made a YouTube video mocking it.
