The Lord Of The Rings: 11 Dumb Moments Everyone Ignores

9. The Fellowship Of The Ring: Hobbits Are Always Hungry And Thirsty

During Bilbo€™s opening narrative, €œConcerning Hobbits,€ he waxes on about how Hobbits are fond of farming and making beer. When Frodo and Sam encounter Merry and Pippen, they are running through Farmer Maggot€™s cropland with stolen food. When they fall off the cliff, what gets them on their feet is wild mushrooms. And there€™s a discussion in the Prancing Pony about the size of beer mugs. As Strider leads them through the backwoods on the way to Rivendell, Pippin complains about €œsecond breakfast? Elevenses?€ On Weathertop, with all of the Nazgul on their tail, they start a cooking fire, foolishly alerting the enemy to their presence. Later, when the Fellowship is packing for the canoe trip, Legolas samples the lembas (Elvish waybread) with delight.
Legolas: One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man! Merry: How many did you eat? Pippin: Four.
It€™s a running gag that thankfully doesn€™t appear as much in the other two films, but it does start to get tiresome after a while.
