9. The Fellowship Of The Ring: Hobbits Are Always Hungry And Thirsty
During Bilbos opening narrative, Concerning Hobbits, he waxes on about how Hobbits are fond of farming and making beer. When Frodo and Sam encounter Merry and Pippen, they are running through Farmer Maggots cropland with stolen food. When they fall off the cliff, what gets them on their feet is wild mushrooms. And theres a discussion in the Prancing Pony about the size of beer mugs. As Strider leads them through the backwoods on the way to Rivendell, Pippin complains about second breakfast? Elevenses? On Weathertop, with all of the Nazgul on their tail, they start a cooking fire, foolishly alerting the enemy to their presence. Later, when the Fellowship is packing for the canoe trip, Legolas samples the lembas (Elvish waybread) with delight.
Legolas: One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man! Merry: How many did you eat? Pippin: Four.
Its a running gag that thankfully doesnt appear as much in the other two films, but it does start to get tiresome after a while.
