The Martian: 8 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References You Need To See

6. Happy Days For Mark

While stranded on Mars, Mark Watney's not exactly got the widest selection of entertainment (clearly there's no 4G there). All he's got to work to while saving his life is Commander Lewis' collection of disco music, leading to the likes of Waterloo and Starman scoring some of the film's standout moments. But that's not the only Space Age (sort of) relic he has to fill his time - Mark's seen multiple times watching Happy Days, even letting it influence his pose in his first image sent back to Earth. After, all, who could resist the opportunity to do Fozie's "Ayyy" to the entire world? Why on Earth a show that's sixty-odd years old by the events of the film (and literally jumped the shark halfway through its run) was included on the mission is never made clear. Maybe Lewis loves seventies TV as much as she does music. Or maybe the 255 episodes was viewed as a good time-filler for the many-Sol mission.
