Because Neo and his crew can bend the rules of reality to give themselves superpowers, The Matrix has often been compared to comic book stories. What's interesting about this comparison is The Matrix nearly started as a graphic novel.

During the 1990s, the Wachowskis were writing horror comics with visionary author, Clive Barker, like Ectokid and Hellraiser. These were written under the Razorline and Epic Comics's imprints (which both belonged to Marvel).

Because the pair had already written The Matrix script, they were preparing to turn it into a new comic series. But after their screenplay for Bound was green-lit, the siblings decided to focus on moviemaking.

After the critical success of their directorial debut, the Wachowskis decide to adapt The Matrix for the big-screen and the rest is history.
