After months and months of anticipation, the first trailer for the upcoming fourth Matrix movie, The Matrix Resurrections, has finally landed online following its recent premiere at CinemaCon.

And to say that it's broken the Internet would be quite the understatement.

To the surprise of nobody, the trailer for the first Matrix movie in almost 20 years is a visually stunning collage of gorgeous world-building and scintillating action, albeit one that ends up raising far more questions than answers.

The mesmerising three-minute trailer has done an incredible job of getting fans talking, by feeding breadcrumbs of where the plot and characters may be headed, but providing little in the way of concrete explanations.

There's so much to unpack in this densely-packed collage of imagery, and while the next trailer will presumably shed a little more light on what we're looking at, for now these are the biggest burning questions we all have.

But thankfully fans don't have that long to wait to experience The Matrix Resurrections for themselves, as it's due out for release just before Christmas - a mere three-and-a-half months from now...

10. How Are Neo & Trinity Alive?

The big burning question right out of the gate concerns Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) - namely, how are they alive?

In The Matrix Revolutions, Trinity was fatally impaled and Neo succumbed to his injuries before his body was carried off by the machines, though the Oracle (Mary Alice) did cryptically hint that Neo may return one day.

The first trailer for Resurrections shows both characters alive and well, though seemingly having no memory of one another or the events of the original trilogy.

Given the fleeting glimpses we see of the machines tinkering around with Neo and Trinity, it seems probable that their bodies have been somehow reinserted into the Matrix but with their memories wiped, allowing them to live blissfully ignorant "normal" lives.

At least until Neo's suppressed memories of his previous life begin leaking into his present one, and presumably after he stops taking the blue pills given to him by his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris), his memories will start to return, allowing him to regain use of his powers and link back up with Trinity.
