The Matrix Resurrections: 25 WTF Moments
12. There Was An Inter-Machine War
During one of the film's many relentless mid-film exposition dumps, we're also told about something that honestly might've made for a more entertaining movie than what we got.
When Neo asks Niobe what happened to Zion, she explains that trouble brewed once the Machines' power plants weren't able to produce enough energy, presumably as a result of the truce which allowed humans to peacefully exit the Matrix if they wanted.
This led to effectively a civil war breaking out between the Machines as they battled over resources, and though we sadly only see a few brief glimpses of the Machines shellacking the hell out of each other, these shots are some of the movie's very best.
Given that the original trilogy crystallised how united a threat the Machines represented to humanity, it's fascinating to see that dynamic flipped on its head due to a scarcity of energy.
In the unlikely event we ever get another Animatrix, this would be the perfect story to tell in that format.
