The Matrix Resurrections Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Totally Insane Climax

While the movie's action sequences generally fall far short of the standard set by their predecessor, Resurrections' absolutely nutty climax at least tries to deliver a finale worthy of the franchise.

There are certainly issues with it regardless, but this final battle sees Lana Wachowski letting loose with every remaining trick in her arsenal, melding ridiculous gunfights and wire work with motorcycle chases and other things we can't even hint at.

It's still the softest final battle of the entire series - yes, even the anime-inspired Neo-Smith fight in Revolutions is better - but at least ratchets the scope of the action up to a level that doesn't feel so divorced from the first three films.

This leads to a triumphant ending that feels like a fitting departure point for the entire franchise, albeit while leaving the door open just enough if Resurrections turns out to be a surprise box office smash.
