The Matrix Resurrections Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. It's One Of The Boldest Blockbuster Sequels EVER

The Matrix Resurrections Trinity

It's hilariously obvious from the film's opening scenes that Lana Wachowski basically conceived Resurrections as a flipping of the bird at Warner Bros. and basically the film industry as a whole.

To that end this movie is one of the strangest and most envelope-pushing sequels ever made, a film so acutely aware of its franchise's own legacy and seemingly loathing the fact that it has to exist as part of it at all.

Blatant references are made to the Matrix reboot that almost happened a few years ago, and it's clear watching this fourth film that Wachowski only really made it to stop Warner Bros. pushing ahead with a more typical reimagining.

That the studio released the film seemingly without curtailing Wachowski's vision is laudable, even if the end result is massively messy and not particularly satisfying overall.

As much as Deadpool has made meta-narratives popular with the mainstream, seeing a relatively serious-minded sci-fi franchise gaze so mockingly over its own shoulder, and also dare to upend what audiences expect, will ensure this sequel isn't easily forgotten for better or worse.
