The Meg Review: 4 Ups & 5 Downs

4. Not Enough Meg

The Meg
Warner Bros.

This isn't terribly surprising, but it is definitely disappointing. While Steven Spielberg's Jaws taut us all the value of keeping the monster mostly obscured from view, a movie featuring a 70-foot shark is not one that should adhere to that rule.

Sadly, the megalodon itself only makes fleeting appearances throughout the film, not showing up until about one-third through the movie and launching brief, sporadic attacks for the rest of it.

Nobody has any illusions about what this movie is, so why not give audiences a relentless barrage of gigantic shark mayhem? Instead, the focus is more squarely on the human characters who, er, shouldn't really be the main attraction.
