The Midnight Sky Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

4. The Stunning Visuals

Even when the script falters, this is an absolutely gorgeous film, with Clooney making the sure most of his $100 million budget.

For starters, the moment-to-moment cinematography from Martin Ruhe is beautifully rich, complimenting the eye-wateringly lush production design - particularly all the sharp neon lighting throughout both the research station and the spaceship.

The visual effects are also frequently spectacular, especially during a mid-film space-set action sequence, ensuring that every damn penny of the budget clearly wound up on-screen.

While there's no guarantee any of these technical accomplishments will be noted by the Academy, the production design and VFX in particular are really quite superb - especially when viewed in Netflix's 4K HDR presentation.
