The Mummy: 5 Key Things We Already Know

2. More Than One Monster

The Mummy
Universal Pictures

In 1943, we got the first monster movie crossover with Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. The movie acted as a sequel to The Wolf Man and The Ghost of Frankenstein. The original Universal Monsters started gracing the silver screen in 1931, and it took 12 years before a crossover movie ever took place.

The new series isn't waiting 12 years to bring in another monster, opting to have a second creature in their first film. Russell Crowe will be playing Doctor Jekyll in The Mummy. Although not typically considered to be in the pantheon of classic Universal Monsters, the original 1931 film of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde actually predates Dracula, which most consider to be the beginning of the Universals iconic shared universe.

While Tom Cruise will be the eyes through which the audience is introduced to this new universe, Russell Crowe will be the experienced figure that guides us. He knows all about this world of monsters and will end up being the character who is forced to go through all the exposition we'll need to understand The Mummy.
