One of the changes from the original Mummy movie is a gender swap with the monster. Instead of Boris Karloff, this time we get Sofia Boutella playing Princess Ahmanet as the titular Mummy.

Unlike Karloff's character, Boutella's has some basis in Egyptian myth. Historically, instead of being a Mummy, Ahmanet is a Egyptian goddess whose name means "the female hidden one." In some regions of Egypt, she was even thought to protect the Pharaoh. Behind the scenes footage has shown the film Princess Ahmanet bound with chains large enough to hold King Kong, so unlike Karloff, this new Mummy had powers prior to her death.

It's unlikely that much of her actual Egyptian history will be part of the film. Director Alex Kurtzman recently stated that the original design for the Mummy was male and had blue skin. However, after the post credit scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Mummy was changed as it shared a similar design to the X-Men villain Apocalypse.
