The New Mutants: 10 Major New Details Revealed About The Marvel Movie

Some huge new details have been revealed following a last-minute Comic-Con@Home panel...

Last night, Disney held a virtual Comic-Con@Home panel for The New Mutants. The movie was shot way back in 2017 before being given an April 2018 release date. Unfortunately, plans for reshoots resulted in it being postponed, and the later Disney/Fox merger pushed it even further down the calendar. Then, just as it seemed it would finally arrive in cinemas, current world events changed things yet again.

Now, the Marvel Comics adaptation is potentially just weeks away, and a combination of that last-minute panel and a series of interviews with the cast and crew have resulted in a tonne of new details surfacing.

From the truth behind those reshoots to plans for characters who were cut to budgetary concerns, and even the trilogy which was being developed before Marvel Studios regained the rights to the X-Men, the rocky journey these mutants have faced to reach the big screen is an undeniably fascinating one.

All of that and more is addressed here, including clarification on those recent reports that that Disney has managed to find a way to send The New Mutants straight to Disney+. Whatever the future holds in store, though, the studio is clearly trying to get fans excited again if this latest info dump is any indication...

10. It's Still Getting A Theatrical Release...Really!

All those delays have definitely lessened anticipation for The New Mutants among many fans and, at this point, it really does feel like Disney should just pull the plaster off and stick the movie on Disney+. Even before all the madness going on in the world right now, box office tracking pointed to a lowly $15 million - $25 million opening weekend, and it will now inevitably be even lower than that.

Earlier this week, an Australian TV spot appeared to confirm that The New Mutants is indeed heading straight to that streaming service in early September, but last night's Comic-Con@Home panel kicked off with tongue in cheek confirmation that The New Mutants is coming to cinemas on August 28th.

That was accompanied by a small note underneath reading "Fingers crossed," and while Disney deserves credit for having some fun with all these delays, it's impossible to imagine Fox's final X-Men movie meeting that date when the likes of Tenet and Mulan have been completely pulled from the release calendar, with no new slots given to them until things start returning to normal.
