The New Mutants Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

4. It's Horribly Edited

This probably won't surprise many given the film's laboured production, but The New Mutants sure is a sloppy presentation from an editorial perspective.

Beyond the fact you'll feel every single one of its 94 minutes due to generally wonky pacing, it's clear that the end product has basically been patchworked together in editing, presumably in order to paper over the holes which weren't ever fixed during reshoots that never happened.

As a result, the film is full of abrupt and jarring cuts between scenes, and a ton of distracting ADR dubbing with characters' faces being curiously off-screen even when speaking a pivotal piece of dialogue.

While this is fundamentally an incomplete film which Boone never got to finish, that doesn't take away from the fact that the version people are going to see is messy and chaotic.
