The New Mutants Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

3. The Sloppy Visual Effects

It truly is a shocker that this thing ended up costing around $80 million all things considered, because the middling nature of the film's visual effects certainly suggest otherwise.

A visually hideous opening sequence which introduces audiences to Moonstar (Blu Hunt) is awash in blurry, near-incomprehensible effects work, again evoking the vibe of a much lower-budget TV pilot rather than a major motion picture.

Though some of the effects throughout the movie are acceptable, it falls down hard where it counts most, and that's with the cartoonish depiction of Demon Bear in the final stretch.

Never once is the audience invited to take this entity seriously, because it never looks anything less than a silly CGI bear flailing around.
