The New Mutants Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

2. The Totally Unconvincing Accents

Though the cast is by far the most successful and appealing aspect of the movie, it still has to be said that most of the accents aren't great, to be kind.

Maisie Williams gives a Scottish accent the old college try, though she frequently slips out of it throughout the movie, while Charlie Heaton's attempt to give Cannonball a southern American accent ends up making the character feel like a pure hick caricature.

Anya Taylor-Joy's Russian accent for Magik fares somewhat better, though she's also guilty of occasionally letting the accent drop, as is sure to leave audiences either laughing or cringing.

All in all it's possible these issues could've been remedied with reshoots, but as it stands, the decision to get adventurous with the accents probably wasn't worth all the fuss.
