Tellingly enough, one of the most interesting shots from the trailer didn't actually feature anyone from the cast, but rather a selection of gravestones.
The interesting thing here is that each and every last one is marked with a number and not a name. What does this mean? Well, the more likely avenue here is that these stones are located around the facility, and belong to what are - most likely - mutants.
This could all be a part of the misdirection the trailer is surely playing with, but if the facility truly is a house of horrors - and it's exploiting mutants every chance it gets - then these graves only further hammer home the exploitation mutants have been facing in this current timeline.
We know not when the New Mutants is set (the upcoming Dark Phoenix will purportedly take place in the nineties), but what we do know is that it's following in the footsteps of Fox's other R-rated features. Time will tell if the horror theme works out, but - in any case - we should all be excited by the fact that it truly is trying something different.
