The Outsider Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs
5. Emile Hirsch's Bizarre Cameo
Emile Hirsch makes an unexpected cameo appearance in the movie's third act as one of Nick's former Army pals, and the single scene in question is so staggeringly out of place with the rest of the film it feels like it probably should've been cut.
Hirsch is in the film for just a few short minutes, and apart from lending just the slightest context to Nick's situation in Japan, his role is generally quite pointless, concluding with a bizarre, eyebrow-raising moment that is quickly abandoned and never returned to.
Hirsch is a fine actor, but he feels totally wasted in this cup-of-coffee cameo, and as suddenly as we're introduced to his character, he also disappears out of the movie in a flash. Weird.
