5. The Tone Seems Messy & Unclear

That opening sequence ties into another issue apparent from the trailer: there's no clear, consistent tone throughout, and this smacks of a movie that has no idea what it wants to be.

Placing a child at the centre of the story isn't inherently an issue, even in a movie targeting adults - it certainly didn't hurt Logan - but the goofiness of this and a later scene where the Predator shows up at a school clash harshly with the more brutal action and more typical, testosterone-fuelled tone of the soldiers taking on the Predator.

Indeed, Fox apparently wants Black to create a blockbuster franchise out of the legendary creature, but it seems like the movie's being pulled in several different directions at once, pandering to a broader audience while homaging the unapologetic brutality of the better Predator films.
