The Predator Trailer 2: 9 Things You Might Have Missed
3. Not What's On The Horizon
One of the biggest mistakes the Predator franchise made in attempting to deliver prior sequels was believing that the creature was what made the first film so great. This is a mistake several franchises have made over the years (*cough* Jurrasic Park *cough*) that its kind of mind-boggling.
The Predator is in that first film for all of ten minutes, tops. What makes that film work so well are the fleshed out characters, incredible performances, great writing, and the sure-handed direction of John McTiernan. That's certainly not to say that there is such a thing as too much Yautja action, but just to say that what makes these films stand the test of time is having a great film with a solid story and compelling characters for the Yautja to inhabit.
And a line in the new trailer seems to directly address this. In a conversation with Olivia Munn's character, Sterling K. Brown says
"Predators just don't sit around making hats out of ribcages. They conquered space, but that's not what's on the horizon. I think you know what is on the ship."
This teases a film that is more than happy to explore the Predator mythology in bold new ways but is also promising to keep its head out of its ass. The story is here, about this section of the Yautja, this ship, and these people. Space and other stories may come later, but only after delivering a compelling version of this story.
