The Revenant: What To Expect Based On The Epic Trailer

3. A Hallucinatory Trip

Teaser trailers aren't often designed to give much away in terms of plot; usually they're more like mini mood pieces, short films made to offer a sense of the movie's tone. In The Revenant teaser, there's predictably not much story to go on, but there's a palpable feeling of the overall mood that audiences should expect.

The suggestion is that the film on the whole will have a woozy sort of atmosphere, the trailer's muted sound and weird collection of images pointing to a trippy kind of survival movie. You have Glass walking through the snowy ruins of an abandoned church, a pyramid made of bones, a burning boat, an unknown character wearing some kind of skull mask.

Out of context, of course, these images - strung together with that dreamy, doomy score by Graeme Revell - are bound to give off a hallucinatory feel. Time will tell if the final movie is quite as abstract as the teaser, but for now it seems Inarritu hasn't lost his taste for the absurd and the gothic.
