The Single Biggest Mistake Each Fast & Furious Film Has Made
1. F9 - The Terrible Script
As mentioned earlier, Fast & Furious (2009) is the worst Fast and Furious movie to date... but F9 comes dangerously close to outdoing it.
It's so sad to say this, but F9 is a dud. Despite Justin Lin's strong direction and typically fine work from the cast, F9 is an overlong, witless and unexpectedly dull action flick that lacks much in the way of personality or tension.
This can all be chalked up to the film's terrible script, which was written by Lin and Daniel Casey. The thing is, the franchise's usual screenwriter Chris Morgan didn't write this one and F9 really shows just how important he's been to the franchise's success.
Morgan nailed exactly the right formula - ludicrous but suspenseful action sequences, plenty of humour and a warm, gently touching vibe - and that's almost entirely absent here. The jokes are crap, the characters don't have as much chemistry as normal and they all seem so invincible and invulnerable during the action scenes that any suspense is completely lost.
Perhaps worst of all, the film forces in a painfully forced and badly-written emotional backstory for Dom and his brother Jakob (John Cena), the film's villain, and this further screws up the film's tone.
Let's just hope the tenth film gets Fast and Furious back to its normal high standard.
