Captain America: The Winter Soldier is arguably the greatest MCU film of all time. Many things contributed to this - the Russo Brothers' superb direction, the stunning action set-pieces and the ever-reliable ensemble cast, but in the end, the film's script was the biggest reason for its success.

Both a dazzling, exhilarating superhero action flick and a murderously suspenseful political thriller with fully fleshed-out characters, a superbly-realized story world and a jaw-dropping mid-film plot twist, The Winter Soldier is a beautifully-written superhero film that is as wonderfully thrilling as it is intensely thought-provoking.

It's also an exceptionally well-executed sequel where comparisons to The Empire Strikes Back would be perfectly justified. It expands the world, presents new challenges for its heroes, ups the stakes enormously and completely changes the course of the entire MCU.

The Nick Fury twist was very poor and painfully obvious, but other than that, this is a superb piece of blockbuster storytelling that skilfully mixes spectacle and substance and makes it look easy. It's one of the very best screenplays in MCU history.
