The Snowman Review: 1 Up & 9 Downs

6. It's Not Gory Enough

The Snowman's R-rating and marketing that focused on grisly murders suggested that this was going to be a film rife with gnarly, gory detail, so it's surprising that the end result is actually relatively restrained.

For the most part, director Tomas Alfredson cuts around the murder scenes and doesn't explicitly show too much blood-letting, save for one comically over-the-top shotgun blast to the head, which comes complete with awful CGI brains exploding everywhere.

If there's any film to linger on the lurid, graphic details of a murder, it's an adaptation of a high-trash thriller novel like this. Instead, those hoping to see the R-rating put to good use will likely be left sorely disappointed.
