The Spectacular Spider-Man: 10 Reasons It's Already Doomed
10. A Sony Picture
Let's get this big problem out of the way from the off; The Spectacular Spider-Man is a Sony movie. It will be produced by the Sony-owned Columbia Pictures, distributed by Sony and overseen by Sony chief Amy Pascal. Yes, they have a MCU movie setting up the character (Captain America: Civil War) and Marvel super-boss Kevin Feige on board as a Creative Consultant, but at the end of the day the franchise belongs to Sony and that means all bets on the third Spider-Man reboot of the millennium being any good are off. Although Sony Pictures is now best known for having lacklustre web security, it's their complete mishandling of Spidey over the past decade that their name epitomises to comic book fans. Heck, the whole Marvel deal is built on how they completely cocked up the Amazing series. Every decision made since Spider-Man 2 has been financially motivated; put Venom into Spider-Man 3 to sell more toys; reboot to avoid losing the rights; only have one villain in the reboot because Spider-Man 3 didn't work; have more than one villain in the sequel to the reboot because The Amazing Spider-Man didn't work. That tact may be quelled somewhat my Marvel's involvement, but don't expect it to go away entirely. The only real upside to this is that Avi Arad, who served as producer on all previous Spidey movies and pushed many of those business decisions through, has been downgraded to Executive Producer.
