The Spectacular Spider-Man: 10 Reasons It's Already Doomed

8. The Title Feels Lazy

The decision to not simply rename the 2012 reboot of Spider-Man, well, Spider-Man was one of the few astute decisions in the whole process. The Amazing Spider-Man was the name of the original Spider-Man comic series (following his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy), so was the logical title for a movie attempting to go back to the character's core. That it didn't do that isn't really the fault of the naming process. With the simple character name and main comic book both exhausted for title inspiration, this third version is going with The Spectacular Spider-Man. And if that sounds like the natural regression and third-best title, that's because it is. The Spectacular Spider-Man has been used as a name for various comics that ran alongside the main Amazing books, most prominently a continued run through the eighties and nineties, and more recently an incredibly popular animated TV series, but it was always as an alternative. To fans, the Spectacular moniker is one that sits below Amazing, while to those just familiar with the movies it just sounds like lazy justification. At least it's not The Superior Spider-Man. Nobody wants that.
